Inserting Special Characters
To insert special characters in Word we use the Insert Symbol dialog box. When you go to the Insert menu and choose Symbols you will have to first find the font set that contains the symbol you want to use. Many standard characters, for example the Japanese Yen ¥, appear in the Normal Text set. |

Once you have found the character you want to use you simply click to choose it and then click the Insert and Close buttons. This is fine if you only want to use the symbol once. If you are using the symbol continually speed this up by assigning it to a shortcut key. |

Assigning a character to a shortcut key
In Word, choose Insert and then Symbol and then click to choose the symbol you wish to assign to a key. Choose the Shortcut Key button, this takes you to the Assign dialog box. Type the shortcut key you want to use. This can be Alt or Ctrl plus any letter or number on the keyboard. We recommend you use Alt so that you don't replace any of the standard Ctrl key shortcuts which can be quite useful. Now choose Assign and then click Close twice to return to the document. Test this new keystroke by holding down Alt or Ctrl and typing the number or letter you have assigned. If you have a time saving shortcut or a tip you would like to appear on this page please send it to us. |
