Watermarks in Word 97 and 2000

There has been a lot of interest in last months Hints & Tips showing how to create Watermarks in Word 2002, and requests for information on how to do this in previous versions of Word. Read on if you want to create a Watermark in Word 97 or 2000.

Watermarks in Word 97- 2000

To create a printed watermark on every page using Word 97 -2000 the watermark is placed in a Header/Footer. The best way to create text watermarks like "Copy" or "Draft" is to use WordArt.

Open the document you want to watermark and choose Header/Footer from the View menu to change into Header/Footer view. Click the Show/Hide Document Text button on the Header/Footer toolbar if you want to hide the document text.

WordArt

Switch the Drawing toolbar on and choose the Insert WordArt button to display the WordArt Gallery. The very first layout is a suitable one for a text watermark. Once you have chosen your layout, type text into the Edit WordArt text window and choose OK.

From the WordArt toolbar that should now be on the screen choose the Format WordArt button and choose a suitable format. A very light grey fill colour can be very effective.

To rotate your WordArt text click on the WordArt to select it and use the Free Rotate button on the drawing toolbar. When you have chosen Free Rotate green circles appear on the corners of the WordArt. Drag these circles to get the WordArt to the position you require.

When you are happy with the WordArt watermark click the Close button on the Header/Footer toolbar. You should be able to see your watermark on the screen, but if not, use Print Preview and the watermark should now appear on every page.
