Hints & Tips - September 2003

Previous Hints & Tips page

This months Hints & Tips is about positioning pictures in Word. If you can remember as far back as Word 97 you inserted a picture and you could move it anywhere on the page. Most of us are now using Word 2000 and XP and many people ask why pictures are now so difficult to move around. To solve this read on ....

In-line pictures

From Word 2000 onwards Microsoft have changed the way pictures are positioned and when you insert a picture it now becomes an "in-line" picture and is treated like any other character. You can centre it, right align it, indent it, etc., all using the icons in the formatting toolbar. What you can't easily do is position it anywhere on the page. You can drag it with the mouse but it is difficult to position exactly and you can't move it into the margins.

Changing the Layout

This can be easily solved by changing the layout of the picture. Insert the picture as normal and then right-click the picture and choose Format Picture. Choose the Layout tab and you will see that the wrapping style is set to "In Line with Text", change this to "Square" and choose OK.

You can now drag your picture anywhere on the page, even into the margins.
